Dr Paul Brent's presentation:

Packaging and food contact materials looms as an issue of major importance for brand owners, retailers and packaging manufacturers.  Globally and in Australia, there is a growing public debate and political concern about the issue.

Just last week, the Government announced the voluntary phase out by major retailers – the Wesfarmers group, Woolworths, Big W and Aldi - of baby bottles containing Bisphenol A. But the issue goes beyond BPA and includes perfluorochemicals, phthalates, semicarbazide, epoxidised soybean oil, acrylonitrile and vinyl chloride as well as nano-particles and recycled content.Food Standards Australia, which has regulatory responsibility for the matter is also aware that a growing amount of packaging is imported from Asia, particularly China and the doubts that exist about the food material content and public health aspects of that packaging. Hear what’s happening both globally and in Australia from Dr Paul Brent.
